Sunday School

The Children's Education Program at Congregation Beth Adam includes students in grades K - Bar/Bat Mitzvah. Students learn about Humanistic and traditional Jewish history, culture, traditions. They celebrate Jewish holidays, learn bible stories, study Israel, participate in Friday Night Shabbats and much more. Students also learn how to read and speak conversational Hebrew. Music is an principle component for our students. They learn holiday songs along with knowledge of Yiddish, Klezmer, and Ladino music.

The philosophy of the Children's Education Program is to teach the students self empowerment. Students are taught respect for all religions, responsibility for their actions, problem solving and critical thinking skills.

Listen to one of our student's speak about his experience.

Mitzvah Program

The curriculum for students in the Mitzvah program focuses on Jewish Literacy. Topics discussed include Jewish Family Life, Shabbat and other Festivals, Social Actions, Jewish History, Heritage and Identity, and finally Israel.

During the year of study the student has several responsibilities that will be presented at their Bar/Bat Mitzvah service. The first is to emphasize their Jewish Heritage by writing a research paper on an individual person or topic of interest. Next, they choose a Humanistic reading from the Torah, and present it in Hebrew and English along with a written a commentary. Finally, they state a short comment on what they have learned about themselves and Judaism.

An important component of the Bar/Bat Mitzvah year is to show a commitment to both Judaism and the community. The student is required to attend services and perform some ceremonial duties. They also demonstrate social action by volunteering in the community.

Post-Mitzvah Program

Once a student has completed their Bar/Bat Mitzvah they enter the Post-Mitzvah program. This program concentrates on how to be Jewish in the community and learning about other religions. The students go on field trips to a variety of Historical Jewish locations, attend Jewish cultural events, participate in programs with other Jewish students in the community, and attend functions at other religious communities. The student also completes a social action project that affects the community in a positive manner.
